Replacing Door Gaskets

Today we are going to look at how to exchange a gasket on a cooler, refrigerator or freezer. Gaskets are very important because they form the seal between the outside warm air and the inside cool air in a refrigerator, cooler or freezer. If warm air seeps into the refrigeration compartment it causes the refrigerator to work harder and longer than necessary. That means it'll need to be serviced more, eventually wear out sooner and cause you to use more energy.

So let's take a look at this gasket. It's helpful to regularly inspect the gasket looking for cracks, places were the gasket has become brittle and broken down and places where the rubber no longer meets the door frame. This gasket no longer meets the door frame, so it needs to be replaced. It's very important to get the correct gasket for your unit and the best way to do that is to get the model number and serial information from the tag in the refrigeration compartment and give us a call or an E-Mail. That way we can help you get the right gasket. When you have the right gasket then it's time to prepare it and the best way to prepare it is to warm the gasket in hot water. You can put it in a sink and run hot water over it, then the warm rubber stretches better and fits around the door easier.

Now let's take that old gasket off, we'll start up here in the corner, pull that corner off and then move back across the rest of the door. Now it's time for the new gasket. We'll again start in that same corner taking care to fit that corner into the slot there in the door and then we'll move along the span of the gasket. Make sure that you press the gasket into the door all along the gasket. The last side is typically the most challenging so you'll need to allow some time there. As you work your way along the gasket, find the slot in the door and press the gasket dart in.
